IND vs NAM LIVE COMMENTARY

INDIA INNINGS

IND 77/0 in 9 overs: Rohit goes over the bowler’s head. Uses his feet and the flatter delivery has disappeared in no time. An otherwise decent over for Namibia.

IND 70/0 in 8 overs: Smit fires one into Rohit’s pads and with the fine leg within the 30-yard circle, it makes the India opener’s job easy. Four more. Fifty up for Rohit off 31 balls – his second in T20 WC 2021.

IND 63/0 in 7 overs: Frylinck into the attack. He mixes it up well – the slower bouncer, the short and fast, the length ball – to not give enough to the batters to work with. Ends off with a leg-side delivery, however, to get punished by Rohit. Four!

IND 54/0 in 6 overs: Smit to bowl his first, from round the wicket. Rahul gets into the act now – power and elegance combined as he drills through the cover point region. The third back-to-back fifty partnership is up for the duo and the required rate is now below 6 an over.

IND 44/0 in 5 overs: Namibia goes for the players’ review for Rohit’s scalp. Rohit gets down on a knee but misses the line of Scholtz’s left-arm spin; hits him on the arm. Umpire’s decision has been vindicated as the impact is found to be outside off. Four! Cut through point by Rohit. A cracking sound of the bat as he steps out next to go all the way. Uses his body weight to get his power through the ball. Effortless from the Indian vice-captain.

IND 33/0 in 4 overs: Stand and deliver. KL pulls and pulls hard. Six over deep mid-wicket! Good comeback from Wiese who fires in four dots after the humongous 82m maximum.

Rohit Sharma becomes third male batter to reach 3000 T20I runs

IND 26/0 in 3 overs: Rohit welcomes Trumpelmann with a boundary straight down the ground. That brings up his 3000* runs in T20Is. Rohit gets a lifeline again as a miscued pull lands short of the mid-wicket fielder.

IND 17/0 in 2 overs: Wiese into the attack. Rohit finds his groove! Wiese offers some room and Rohit lofts him over extra cover for four. He mistimes the pull and nearly gifts his wicket next ball. Wiese tails the ball in and baang! Rohit shoves it away for SIX!

IND 6/0 in 1 over: KL sets off with a flick to square leg. Rohit is dropped second ball, goodness me! Trumpelmann sets up the incoming delivery on length to Rohit’s thighs. Rohit attempts to flick it down leg but sends the ball straight to short fine leg who lets the ball straight through his hands for four.

We’re back for the chase. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma at the crease for India. Trumpelmann with the new ball.

TARGET: INDIA NEEDS 133 TO WIN

NAMIBIA INNINGS

NAM 132/8 in 20 overs: Smoked outta here! Into the slot and Trumpelmann goes exploring the distance over long-on. Four now. KL Rahul, at long-on, puts his money on the line, however, on this occasion. Marvellous effort but it slips through. Suryakumar keeps the last delivery down to a single, even as it almost spun past him.

NAM 119/8 in 19 overs: Run out opportunity missed. Bumrah sticks his right hand out to grab the ball, even as Frylinck was way out of the crease. Has a shy at the sticks but misses. Rohit pouches another! Wiese digs out a yorker and it balloons over to extra cover.

NAM 114/7 in 18 overs: Mohammad Shami, India’s designated death-overs specialist is in. Starts off with a fiery yorker which has been worked away towards deep square leg for a single. Four overthrows! A rocket throw from Jadeja and there was nobody backing up. Pant was miles away as well.

NAM 102/7 in 17 overs: Streaky! Four leg byes through a vacant fine leg area as the 100 comes up for Namibia.

NAM 95/7 in 16 overs: Ashwin to bowl out. The Zingers light up! Looped up again and there is just enough turn on this to leave Green flummoxed. Frylinck saunters in and gets off the mark straightaway. Ash finishes with an impressive 3/20.

NAM 93/6 in 15 overs: Caught! Rohit Sharma puts in a brilliant dive at cover to get rid of Smit. Jadeja has another. This is Rohit’s 43rd catch in T20Is. He is India’s leading catch-taker in the format. Green comes to the crease.

NAM 90/5 in 14 overs: Rahul Chahar oversteps. Worse, he has been hammered through point for four. Wiese doesn’t get hold of the free hit and India just manages to get away with that one. Edged and just past Rohit… AGAIN! Four more.

NAM 77/5 in 13 overs: Freebie for Namibia! A carrom ball from Ashwin and this has missed everybody to go down leg-side to the fence. Five wides. Softest of dismissals, these, as the Namibia skipper departs, caught behind.

NAM 67/4 in 12 overs: Excellent running between the wickets. Wiese hasn’t hit it too hard and that buys him enough time to retake strike.

NAM 62/4 in 11 overs: Rahul is pitching it short. There’s quite a bit of turn on offer. But that won’t deter Erasmus from going over the top, through mid-wicket. Four runs. Four more, as an edge rolls down through the slip region. Lucky! The slip fielder had just been removed.

NAM 51/4 in 10 overs: Ashwin’s back and how! Slow, flighted and edged straight to Rohit at slip. Loftie-Eaton is back in the hut. “Easy as Sunday morning,” goes Daren Sammy from the comms. Time for a drinks break. Wiese is in. Gets a couple with a flick off his pads. So close! Wiese is left shell-shocked. Pushed this through, has Ashwin, and he gets beaten fair and square.

NAM 47/3 in 9 overs: Loftie-Eaton and Erasmus run a deft single. Erasmus decides it is all or nothing as he unleashes the slog against the turn; beaten. He lets out a cry in frustration.

NAM 42/3 in 8 overs: Four! Baard gets down on one knee to pull it through backward square leg. Namibia goes upstairs after the umpire adjudges Baard LBW. The giant screen shows three reds. Namibia loses a review. Would have crashed onto top of middle and leg.

NAM 35/2 in 7 overs: Baard heaves a sigh of relief as the ball dips just short of Rohit at slip. Rahul Chahar finishes a tight first over. Just a run off it.

NAM 34/2 in 6 overs: Jadeja to bowl one of his ‘blink-and-you-miss’ overs. Namibia loses another as Craig charges in early and misses all of it. Pant whips the bails off. Does a brief pause before lighting the stumps up – MS Dhoni flashback vs Mashrafe Mortaza anyone?

NAM 33/1 in 5 overs: Bumrah to bowl from the other end. Comes round the wicket for van Lingen. Bumrah strikes! van Lingen holes out to Shami at mid-off. Craig is in after having a lengthy conversation with van Lingen near the ropes.

NAM 31/0 in 4 overs: Spin introduced with Ashwin to do the honours. van Lingen shimmies down the track to take on Ashwin but messes up the timing; will pick up a couple nevertheless.

NAM 25/0 in 3 overs: Shami starts off with a wide. A much better, fuller second ball which has been pushed back past Shami towards mid-off. SIX! The first of the contest. Baard tees off. Uses the pace on this length ball to make it land 78m away towards deep mid-wicket. This is a great start from Namibia.

NAM 15/0 in 2 overs: Bumrah comes into the attack. Starts off with a beamer, which has deflected off van Lingen towards fine leg for a leg-bye. Another full toss, a ball later and this time van Lingen has driven this beautifully through long-off for four. Hoicked towards leg-side again and the 24-year-old van Lingen ends the over on a high with another boundary.

WHAT THEY SAID

Virat Kohli, India captain: We will bowl first. The tosses have been a big factor. It’s been an honour to captain India and I’ve done my best. The shortest format has to give way for the longest format. I’ve been grateful for the opportunity. It’s time for the next lot to take the team forward. Rohit (Sharma) has been looking on. Indian cricket is in good hands. Rahul Chahar comes in for Varun Chakaravarthy.

Gerhard Erasmus, Namibia skipper: It’s a good opportunity to go up against arguably the world’s best side, and for our batsmen to go up against that bowling line-up of theirs. It was a big thing to get through the group stages. Frylinck comes into the side today, he’s fit to go.

IND vs NAM TOSS

India wins toss and opts to bowl.

IND vs NAM PITCH REPORT

“The wicket is absolutely beautiful – nice, hard and compact. The ball will go through beautifully. Bat or ball first, it wouldn’t matter. The only advantage batting second will be the dew because it will be harder to hold the ball,” reckons Shane Watson.

IND vs NAM PREVIEW

The Indian cricket team cancelled its optional practice session at the ICC Academy on Sunday, after New Zealand’s victory over Afghanistan in its last Super 12 game in Abu Dhabi.

The Kiwis ended India’s thin chance to qualify for the semifinals of the T20 World Cup. And on Monday, Virat Kohli’s final assignment as captain of the T20I side will end on a disappointing note even if India mauls Namibia to finish third in the group of six.

The game at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium will still be significant. A victory for India will be a farewell gift to the outgoing coaches – head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R. Sridhar.

Shastri will hand over the reins to Rahul Dravid.

It will be a perfect opportunity for Kohli to pass on the captaincy baton to the man who would lead the side in the next T20 World Cup. While the selectors are yet to announce the squad, India’s new T20I captain could be unveiled at the time of the toss on Monday.
